Panel PC for Industry

Guide to choosing an Industrial Panel PC

Panel PC for HMI, automation, and IIoT

We have updated our Panel PC range so it better matches the market’s needs.

Choosing an industrial Panel PC is about more than screen size and processor performance. In practice, it is often the environment, the application, and the integration requirements that determine which solution is the right one.

We have updated our range of industrial Panel PCs to better reflect the needs we see in HMI, automation, IIoT, visualization, and logistics.

What is an industrial Panel PC?

An industrial Panel PC is designed for operation in environments where standard office PCs are not sufficient. This includes production facilities, warehouses, process plants, machine control systems, and other installations where reliable operation, long service life, and flexible integration are essential.

Industrial Panel PCs are typically used for HMI, automation, process control, data acquisition, visualization, and edge computing. They can be deployed as operator panels close to the machine, as visualization units in production environments, or as part of an IIoT solution with local data processing.

Guide to choosing an Industrial Panel PC

How to Choose a Panel PC for Industry

Environment and enclosure requirements

Assess the environment in which the Panel PC will be installed. In food, pharmaceutical, and process environments, there is often a need for waterproof stainless steel models with a high IP rating and support for frequent cleaning. In more traditional industrial environments, fanless design, an IP-protected front, and stable operation in dusty or vibration-prone conditions are often the most important factors.

Touch or without touch

It is important to determine whether the solution should include touch or not. In many HMI and operator interface solutions, touch is a central part of the user experience, while other installations are mainly used for display and monitoring. If touch is required, it is also important to choose the right touch technology, where capacitive touch is often best suited for modern user interfaces, while resistive touch may be relevant in more demanding industrial environments.

Platform and operating system

The choice of platform depends on the software, compatibility requirements, and integration needs. ARM-based models are often relevant for energy-efficient solutions running Android or Linux, web HMI, and IIoT. x86-based models are often the best choice for Windows, traditional HMI software, and more demanding industrial applications.

Processor and performance level

The processor should be selected based on the application. For simpler HMI, visualization, and monitoring tasks, an energy-efficient platform may be sufficient, while more demanding software, data processing, and smart manufacturing applications often require higher performance and broader software compatibility.

Screen size and dimensions

Screen size and physical dimensions are important factors in determining where the Panel PC can be installed and how much information the user needs to be able to view at once. Compact models are well suited for space-constrained installations, logistics, and machine-level operator points, while larger widescreen models provide more room for dashboards, process visualization, and complex HMI displays.

I/O and expansion options

Connectivity and expansion options are often crucial in industrial projects. The number of LAN ports, COM ports, USB ports, video outputs, storage options, and wireless expansion capabilities can have a major impact on integration with other systems and on how flexible the solution will be over time.
